Notable Personality Changes:
Most notably, Damon has gone through a complete transformation from a vampire who has completely given up, to a vampire who's owned his past mistakes and his part in his relationship with his brother. Not only has he made peace and apologized for blaming his brother on them becoming vampires, but, he's also made amends with his best friend Bonnie. He read the letter he'll hopefully be receiving aloud to her, and he's fully and completely apologized for leaving her behind.
Three years have passed since his last canon point with Stefan on the run. Damon desiccated for three years, but was awoken early because a vampire hunter named Rayna had found his brother. After taking care of Rayna (and her curse passing to Bonnie), Damon is lured into a vault. He spends months performing atrocities against his will with his old friend Enzo. Elena's memory keeps him focused, but when Sybil the siren learns what he's using, she erases his memory of Elena and places herself in their most important moments. Caroline rattles him at Christmas, giving him back Elena's necklace which lodges something inside his mind. His brother Stefan makes a deal when they're traded to Cade, the devil, he and Damon will take the place of Caroline's twins as Cade's servant. They spend a few weeks rounding up bad people and killing them, but something inside Damon has changed, his humanity is flickering. When Damon finally gets free of Sybil's mind control, kidnaps her and tortures her, she retaliates by turning his humanity back on. This leaves him in a catatonic state. Bonnie and Caroline go inside his mind to try and snap him out of it, but it's Stefan's arrival that breaks his self inflicted spell. He forgives his brother, to which a humanity less Stefan doesn't take to well, but it brings Damon out. With humanity and a new lease on life. Also of note, he even apologizes to Matt Donovan for killing his sister senselessly (and then again, technically), after saving the town from going down in literal hellfire flames.
In short, (ha!), Damon is now a more functional human being. He is an honest to god ally of Caroline Forbes. He's capable and has owned his past mistakes and past sins. Where his first canon point brought him in with a deep underlying sense of guilt, both for Elena and his brother, this Damon returns more at peace, more diplomatic, but still willing to do whatever it takes. This Damon has a clear conscience. He has no grudge against his brother, something he's held since they turned. He's lived with and is dealing with the people he's killed both of his own volition and against his will. He'll also hate the idea of this place forcing memories and actions on him, but he'll be even better at playing along. His love for Elena hasn't wavered.
